I had heard from lots of people that the nation is harmful, especially with all the Mayan doomsday prediction and the influx of vacationers. Last October I informed them I had been very interested in organizing a press trip, and contacted INGUAT, the Guatemalan tourism board. I never asked myself”Is Guatemala harmful?”
In a nutshell
I was more than excited, but my feelings of happiness soon become,”what have I gotten myself into?” I’d read about dreadful run-ins from backpackers that were adventure-driven with gang members, so I was apprehensive about my coming trip. My family didn’t help to qualm my concerns- they were also upset I’d determined to do the trip regardless of possible hazards.
After I ordered Guatemala, I was invited by the El Salvadorian tourism board to their nation. I thought it’d be best to kill two birds with one stone (no pun intended) while I was in Central America. I flew to Guatemala City from Miami and took the leap of faith. Following landing, I realized that everything I heard and ruminated about for weeks was wrong.
Guatemala town, like any town, has roads that are dangerous and its own neighborhoods. But after seeing a lot of it, I can tell you with complete certainty that it is safe and a superbly place to see. Considerations do must be obtained – do not walk around at night alone and always listen to your gut (and your manual or driver in case you’ve got one.)
Worrying is almost inevitable, like traveling to some other town with a bad-rap. But being smart and aware is the battle in staying safe and making sure your trip is one you will not ever overlook. My primary concern was my gear. I journey with different cameras which I didn’t wish to go stolen. So, I nixed my belt clips that were regular and then threw to hide my items rather. It worked out perfectly and I’d zero uninvited attention to my cameras.
About has been far from the truth. The people are friendly and warm. The streets are buzzing with average people on their errands. Like any other town on the planet, Guatemala City has its own highs and lows. Play it smart, so do not flash your opinion, camera with, and most importantly be considerate. One thing in life I have heard is that in the event that you do not take risks, you’ll seldom get pay-offs. Traveling via Guatemala has been one of my favorite excursions thus far and I’d suggest that you see, but always having a manual. I also suggest reading international travel advisories before heading anywhere. To answer the questions”Is Guatemala harmful?” I’d say not more harmful than any other nation, you only have to use common sense.
Thanks to the Guatemala Toursim Organization.
